The pico Urbión is the highest elevation of the Sierra de Urbión and the highest point of Soria province. Located at the border with La Rioja, this quartdate mole offers a high mountain landscape modeled by old glaciers, where the circus and alpine lagoons create an environment of wild beauty. From its top, on clear days, the view reaches from the Pyrenees to the Central System, dominating the whole valley of high Duero.
Main Ascension Routes
There are two main challenges to achieve the summit, each with a very different character:
Roads from the Black Lake (Vinuesa): It's the most popular and spectacular. It goes up through the cut of the lagoon, through the Portillo de la Laguna and around the Laguna Larga. It's a path with great visual beauty, but requires saving an important level in a short while.
Route from Castroviejo (Duelo de la Sierra): A more progressive and rocky ascent passing through the Birth of the Duero River. It's the preferred path by those who want to see water sprouting between the rocks before reaching the final crest.
Highlights at the Summit and environs
The ascent to the Urbion is an experience rich in geographical and symbolic milestones:
The Cross of Urbion: A metal milestone crown the top, accompanied by a high-rise mailbox where the highes leave witness to his arrival.
The Eye of Urbion: A curious rock formation near the summit, a natural arch of stone that framed the landscape and was required stop for photographers.
The Duero's birth: Located about 2,140 metres high, it's a place of geographical pilgrimage where the great river of the Plateau begins its walk as a humble thread of water.
Tips for Mountains
To be a high mountain environment, ascent to the pico Urbion requires planning. The climate can change abruptly and snow is usually present from November to well into spring. It is recommended to have technical equipment, sufficient water and always consult with the weather forecast. The reward is an absolute silence and the feeling of being in the true heart of Castile.
