The Natural Reserve of the Urbion Lakes is one of the most wild and beautiful high mountain locations of the Iberian Peninsula. Located at the end of Duguelo de la Sierra and Vinuesa, these lagoons of glacier origin rest at the foot of pico Urbion (2.228 m). This ecosystem, modeled by the ice centuries ago, offers a landscape of cirks, morrenas and gelded waters that contrast with the immensity of Europe's largest wild pine forests.
A Lagoon Set in the Cloud
Unlike the famous Black Lake, all of the Urbion Lakes require a greater physical effort, rewarded the mountain with unique peace and isolation.
Laguna Larga: The most extensive of the complex, situated at more than 2,000 metres high, with clear waters reflect the quartdate crest of the mountainous cordal.
Ice Lake: A small water mirror that, due to its grim location, remains covered with ice for much of the winter and spring.
The birth of the Duero River: A few metres from the lagoons, between rocks and alpine grasslands, springs the water that gives rise to one of the most important rivers of the peninsula.
Hiking and Ascension to the Urbion
A visit to the Reserve challenges trekking lovers with routes passing through landscapes of an outstanding biodiversity.
Roads from Duroco: A spectacular rise passing through spots such as & quot; Castroviejo & quot; and & quot; Cueva del Duero & quot;, passing through pine forests and natural sources.
Retirement of Summits: The cordal allows you to walk through the different lagoons while enjoying panoramic views that reach the Central System and Pyrenees in clear days.
Flora and Funa Alpina: Habitat of the level partridge, corzo and real eagle and botanical species adapted to the extreme mountain climate.
Tips for the Visit to the Highest Mountain
Due to its altitude and isolation, the Natural Reserve of Urbion Lakes requires caution. It's vital to have a look at weather foresight as bad and snow are common even in spring. The best time to visit them is between late May and October, when thawing allows us to admire the pits at its best. It's an essential destination for those who seek the essence of the Sorian mountain and direct contact with the origin of nature.
