The Zamora Piedra Bridge is one of the most iconic civil constructions of the city. Although a Roman origin is pooled with them, today's architecture is mainly Romanesque from the twelfth century. For centuries, it was the only firm step onto the Duero River in miles, making it a strategic place for the trade and transit of pilgrims at the Via de la Plata.

The bridge originally had 22 pointed arches (of which 16 are preserved) and two large defensive towers at its ends that were demolished at the beginning of the 20th century to facilitate traffic.
