Located on an elongated hill that dominates the Sorian plain, Gormaz Castle is a colossal work of military engineering. Built in the 10th century during the caliphate of Al-Hakam II, it holds the title of being the longest European fortress of its time. His more than 1,200 metres of milling perimeter make him an inescapable milestone of the Duero's Route and a mute testimony to the border struggles between Islam and Christianity.
Military architecture of legendary proportions
The structure of Gormaz attests not only to its size but also to the sophistication of its defensive elements and its perfect adaptation to the orography of the ground.
La Puerta Califal: A monumental entrance with a frying arch that preserves remains of its original décor, symbol of Córdoba's power at the border of Duero.
The Alcázar and the Tower of Tribute: The noble area of the fortress, where governors resided and that served as a last defence step in the event of siege.
The 28 Towers: The powerful towers that guaranteed complete control over the surrounding area are distributed throughout its imposing wall.

From its walls, Gormaz Castle offers one of the most impressive panoramic spots of Castile and León, allowing us to see the course of the Duero River and the lands that once visited the Cid Champador.
Legends of the Cid: historically linked to the figure of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, who was master of this village, the castle breathes the aura of the medieval seatresses.
