Located at the top of the hill with the same name, Soria's castle was originally one of the most inpurtifiable fortresses of Spanish Extremadura. Although much of its structure was demolished during the War of Independence, today the enclosure is a green lung that combines the remains of its defensive past with one of the most beautiful walks of the city, immortalized by poets as Antonio Machado.
What to see at the castle's entrance
The current Castle Park allows a tour of Soria's historic memory while enjoying nature.
The remains of the Tower of Homage and Walls: The walls and the foundations of the great tower that dominated the Duero's foot can still be seen, allowing us to imagine the magnitude of medieval fortification.
Panoramic views: That's definitely the best demand today. From his different looks you get a complete vision of the town, the Monastery of San Juan de Duero, the Hermitage of San Saturio and the Sierra de Santa Ana.
The Park and the Parador: The surroundings are equipped with trails, playgrounds and the currently built by Antonio Machado Tourist Parador on part of the old palaciego enclosure.
A Realty and Poesy Environment
The importance of Soria Castle transcends the military to become a cultural symbol of Soria's identity.
Requist symbol: His strategic position was key to the area's re-population in the twelfth century under the reign of Alfonso I the Battler.
Literary Inspiration: The hill and its ruins are leading to numerous verses of "Campos de Castilla," where Machado evokes the decline and nobility of these stones.
Pool and Leisure: During the summer months, the park has a public swimming pool and resting areas that make it the best place for Sorians to escape from the heat.
Visits recommendations
The Castle Park is free and free. It's recommended to come up at dusk to behold how golden light bathes the rooftops and the course of the Duero River. It's an ideal starting or final place for the famous Senderist route that links the castle with the river and the Hermitage of San Saturio.
