The Royal Palace of La Granja isn't just a residence. It's one of the most exquisite jewelry of the European monarchy. Mandado built by Philip V, the first Spanish Borbon, as a haven for his retirement, this ensemble stands out for his refined French Baroque architecture that transports his visitor directly to the court of Versailles. The interiors are an absolute luxury display, with one of the best collection of tapestries and rooms decorated with frescoes, marble and noble timber that preserve the splendor of the 18th century.
But the true heart of La Granja beats in its spectacular gardens. With more than 600 hectares of geometric design, forests and sculptures, this space is widely known for its monumental sources. What makes structures such as the "New Cascade," "Diana's Bathing" or "Fame's Fame" unique is that their original gravity pressure system remains functioning today exactly as in 1720, throwing water jets at an amazing (up to 40 metres) heights without using a single modern bomb.
Data for an actual visit:
• The "Crystal Factory": Your visit isn't complete without passing through the Royal Crystal Factory of La Granja. It's one of the most important industrial institutions of the Ilustration, where even today you can see master blow-blowers work glass with traditional techniques.
• The Royal Pantheon: Unlike most Spanish kings resting at El Escorial, Philip V and his wife Isabel de Farnesio decided to be buried here, at the Collegiate of the Palace, for their profound love for this place of the Sierra de Guadalrama.
• Water Show: Fountains are not continuous. Seeing them under way is a special event that usually takes place at stated dates (as San Luis or Santiago). That day, the noise of water and the magnitude of the jets create an atmosphere of baroque and unbeatable party.
) A golden council: After passing through the gardens, walk to the reservoir of & quot; The Sea & quot;. It's the huge pond that supplies water to the springs and offers one of the quieter and most beautiful views of the mountain reflected above the water mirror.
