The Puerta de la Villa, also called Arco de la Villa or Puerta de Castilla, is the most iconic access to the old town of San Esteban de Gormaz. Originally integrated into the defensive belt surrounding the town, this door has been for centuries the silent witness of the passage of armies, merchants and pilgrims through one of the most disputed squares of the Duero border.
Architecture and Strategic Meaning
That arch isn't just an architectural element but a symbol of the importance that the villa had as a point of control at the Spanish Extremadura.
The Piedra Arch: Built with local sandstone shackle, it has a robust design that allowed to close the passage to the village at times of conflict.
Paso de la Malla: It lies at the base of the hill where the local Romanesque churches are established, marking the border between modern expansion and the protected medieval core.
Welcome Symbol: Currently, under his arch, some of the path of the Way of the Cid passes, recalling that these lands have been passing through key historic characters in the formation of Castile.
A Reunion at the Ride del Duero
To cross the Puerta de la Villa is the natural start of any tour of San Esteban de Gormazo.
Puerta de Castilla: His alternative name underlines his role as one of the main accesses to Spanish lands from the south, monitoring the passing of the Duero River.
Monumental environment: A few steps from the arch are the entrance to the churches of St. Michael and the Virgen del Rivero, both coes of the Sorian porticado.
Integration into the Urban Landscape: The door has been restored and put into value, allowing to appreciate how the wall was merged with the houses and the natural relief of the ground.

The Puerta de la Villa remains the nerve centre of many local celebrations. To visit this monument you can understand the scale of old fortification and enjoy a walk that combines medieval history with the vibrant life of one of the most characteristic locations of Ribera del Duero Soria.
