Located in the southern landscape of the region of the Highlands of Soria (municipality of San Pedro Manrique), this medieval enclave hundreds of centuries of history, pastoril tradition and an exciting chapter of Renaissance as an eco-village. History and Traditional Splendor With origins dating back to the medieval repopulation of the Alhama valley, Armejún was for centuries a prosperous and fenced settlement in the ranar cattle (linked to the Mesta) and mountain agriculture. The town had a strong popular architecture in masonry and stone slabs, community oven, laundry and the iconic Church of San Bartolomé, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Exodus and Abandoning Causes In the mid-20th century, Armejún reached more than a hundred inhabitants. Nevertheless, between the 1960s and 1970s a tiginous depopulation process came about because of several key factors: 1. * * Geographical isolation and lack of infrastructure: * * The absence of asphalt roads, electricity, running water and basic medical services made daily lives extremely harsh. 2. * * Economic transformation: * * The decline of traditional livestock and subsistence agriculture as a result of the industrialization of the great cities (Zaragoza, Madrid, Barcelona and Soria itself) resulted in the massive exodus of young people in search of jobs and education. 3. * * Extreme climate: * * The altitude and strict Sorian winter accentuated isolation in the cold months. By the end of the 1970s, the town became completely uninhabited and became silent and gradually damaged. From Ghost People to Rejected Ecotown At the end of the 1980s and early 1990s, old neighbours and descendants established the Association of Friends of Armejua to avoid his memory's disappearance and to prevent his ruins from being put to an end. From 2013 onwards, a group of new settlers initiated a brave re-population project, permanently settling and promoting the transformation of Armejún into a * * sustainable eco-village * *. Today, as a result of the artisan reconstruction with stone and wood, the use of renewable (solar) energies, permaculture and bioconstruction, Armejún has been re-listed in censuses and established as a reference for rural sovereignty and heritage preservation. < / p > < / Section >
