Located between the north-west of Salamanca and the south-west of Zamora, at the heart of Portugal's natural border, Arribes del Duero Natural Park forms one of the most impressive geological gaps of the Iberic Peninsula. With more than 180 km of river canyons carved by the Duero River and its tributists, this protected environment stands out by its vertically granite cliffs, its vertigo looks and a unique Mediterranean microclimate that allows for the cultivation of vineyards, olive and oranges in banks.
Hey Arribes del Duero: Landscape, canyon and biodiversity
The intermittent of the river line has modelled an abrupt relief where rocky walls reach at some intervals above 200 metres. That orography makes Arribes a key sanctuary for European avifauna, housing reproducing colonies of black stork, real eagle, alamot and leonate vulture.
The most demand-and-demand experiences in the area include:
Environmental cruises by boat: Roadways from the beach of the Rostro (Aldeadávila de la Ribera) or from Miranda do Douro (Portugal) that allow to behold the granite canyon from the water plate itself.
Track of the Mirador: Panoramic observation points accessible by road or small path (PR), such as the Picón de Felipe, the Mirador del Frie or La Code de Mieza.
Roast and heritage: Peoples with traditional Iberian architecture and centuries of underground wineries covered under the Arribes.
The Fumes: The great water jewel of the Arribes
Located between the municipalities of Masueco and Pereña de la Ribera, the well of the Fumos is one of the most spectacular and pounding cascades of Spain. At this point, the waters of the Uces River are precipitated to an empty from a half-foot high granitic cut.
The "Smoke" phenomenon
The impact of water as they fall onto the poza generates a dense water spray curtain that rises as a constant steam cloud. That optic phenomenon, that Miguel de Unamuno immortalized in his travel writings, gives name to his place.
How to visit him: The two perspectives
From Masueco (upper and catwalk): A simple Senderist path leads to a metal catwalk suspended on the coronation of the water leap, offering a cenital vision of the abyss.
From Pereña de la Ribera (Front visit and descent): The path allows us to contemplate the fall of the face throughout its breadth and we descend through an enabling path up to the base of the poza.
Visits: The best time to look at the well of the Fumes in full splendour includes the months of winter and spring (from December to May), coinciding with the melting and the Atlantic rain.
